Consumer Reports® issues "Scam Alert: Don’t Get Ripped Off. " Beware of door-to-door home security sales scams this summer. Never change your security provider without calling Monitronics first.
Watch for these warning signs:
1. High-pressure offers of a "free security system" or "free system upgrade. "
It’s not free. You could end up with two bills and your system may stop working.
2. References that your current security provider is out of business.
This is NOT true.
3. Claims that your "analog security system will stop working. "
Your security system is not analog. It will not stop working
What do these sales people look like?
Typically the sales person is a nice friendly college aged man or woman dressed very neatly. They are often unassuming and can be perceived as very helpful and informative.
What sales techniques do these predatory alarm companies use?
The sales pitch varies. The offers they make sound enticing but are very deceiving. They will make false claims that Monitronics is out of business or has merged with the company they represent. They may tell you that your monitoring service is changing or is outdated and that you need a new alarm system or an upgrade.
Other times they will simply try to convince you that your home security alarm system is inadequate or faulty and needs to be replaced immediately. Often times, they want you to sign a contract immediately or install the same day. They will encourage you to cancel your monitoring service with Monitronics and will sometimes offer to help you do so. Still, note that their technique is often very subtle.
What should I do if I feel I am being solicited by one of these sales people?
Immediately call Monitronics. We have set up a special Home Security Scam Hotline, which you can call at 1-800-396-9815. Never make changes to your home security system with out first calling Monitronics. Make sure you know the facts and whom you are dealing with. One of the best things you can do to report the scam is to get the name of the sales person who knocked on your door and what company they represent.
What happens if I take advantage of their offers?
You immediately risk your home security. The equipment is often installed improperly, which can cause your alarm to stop working. Plus, you risk signing multiple long-term service contracts that will force you to pay two monthly bills.
Is my alarm system impacted by the digital television conversion?
No. Contrary to what the scheming sales person claims, your alarm system equipment is not "analog" and will not stop working when television converts to digital.
