How Smoke Alarms Work
It is essential that every home have smoke alarms. They are the best safety features you can buy to protect yourself, your family and your home.

There are basically two general types of smoke alarms: ionization and photoelectric. Ionization alarms check the level of ions or electrically charged particles in the air, making them sensitive to small smoke particles produced by a flaming fire. Alarm systems activate when a specific amount of ions is detected.

Photoelectric smoke alarms use light beams and sensors to detect or "see" large smoke particles, which are produced by a smoldering or smoky fire. Alarm systems trigger once they "see" the fire.
